The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist

This brilliant church was built in the 1800s and features 86 stained-glass windows as well as numerous hand-painted murals.

One of the most architecturally impressive places not just in Savannah, but the entire Southeastern US is the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Located right in the heart of the city, the congregation for the High Victorian Gothic-inspired Catholic church was formed in the late 1700s. Construction finally began in 1873 and its two spires that tower over Lafayette Square today are one of the most iconic parts of Savannah’s skyline.

Visitors are welcome inside the church when service isn’t being held for self-guided or guided tours if you’d prefer to know more about the history and significance of the basilica. The inside is beautifully adorned with stained-glass windows, carvings, and incredible murals. There are actually a staggering 86 stained-glass windows within the entire building!
